Multiple Pregnancy: The Common Problems and Complications

When it comes to pregnancy, it is always unpredictable even if everything is in place, you cannot know if something will go wrong at the last moment. The unpredicbility increases when it comes to multiple pregnancies.
Some of the common complications of multiple pregnancy are miscarriage, hypertension, placental problems and pre-term labor. Although these complication happens also in single-fetus pregnancies, it occurs more often in multiple pregnancies. These complications doubly increase if the twins are identical or monozygotic. Abortions normally affect one of the babies while the other remains healthy. The only problem in this is if the fetus shares an embryonic sac.
Presently, with the advent of modern technology, multiple pregnancies can be detected in the earliest possible time. With this, the pregnancy can be monitored closely and any problems and complications can be attended to accordingly resulting in a successful pregnancy and healthy babies.
There are many predisposing factors that will lead to multiple pregnancy. These are the age of the woman, fertility pills, heredity, climiphene citrate or Clomid and gonadotrophins.
Problems and complications that results from multiple pregnancies are:
- Anemic mothers due to more demand of protein, folic acid and iron.
- The common discomforts of pregnancy like morning sickness, weight gain and high blood pressure are heightened.
- Increased chance of abortion, premature delivery and post partum hemorrhage.
- Death of one or both babies due to umbilical cord knotting, monoamniotic twins with one weak fetus and acardiac twins.
