Good hygiene is the key to preventing vaginal infections and urinary tract infections. The following are some essential do’s and don’ts:

  • Do urinate after sex to flush bacteria out of the urinary and vaginal tracts.
  • Don’t hold your urine when you have to go. It can allow bacteria to build up and adhere to the bladder walls.
  • Don’t sit in sweaty gym clothes or wet bathing suit. These environments are highly hospitable to yeast.
  • Don’t use douches because they interfere with the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina. Avoid feminine hygiene sprays which are unnecessary and may cause irritation or allergic reaction.
  • Do wipe from front to back after using the bathroom.
  • Don’t wear thong underwear if you are prone to urinary tract infections.
  • Do use just water or a mild, hypoallergenic formula or soap to wash the vulva. The less scented it is, the less irritating it will be.
  • Don’t seat on the bowl when using a public bathroom. You can pick up many diseases from it.
  • Do wash daily and change underwear after.
  • Do visit your doctor regularly and report immediately any abnormality that you will notice.
