Baby Monitor Buying Guide For Parents

Baby monitors are parents’ best friend during those times that they can’t be by their baby’s side. They give comfort to the parents in the sense that the parents can keep an eye on their little ones even if they are far from them.

Baby monitors are a set of small radio transmitters with a base transmitter that is placed in the nursery near the baby and a receiver that you keep with you. Baby monitors differ in range of signal and it is strongly advised to test the range of the monitor’s signal. Wall and other household terrain can greatly affect the monitor’s signal so it will be wise to test the signal in the different rooms of the house. Some monitors operate on batteries, electricity, or a combination of both; others are rechargeable.

There are different kinds of baby monitors. First is the audio monitor. By its name, it transmits only sound. They have multiple channels to minimize interference, a battery indicator and volume control. Some have portable receivers that can be clipped to your clothes. Second type is the video monitor. This monitor will allow you to see and hear your baby through a screen. Some actually utilize infrared technology that allows you to see the nursery, even in total darkness. The third type is the sound and light monitor which have special LED display that will let you hear the baby’s sound through other household sounds like the washing machine or the dishwasher. In addition to standard features, most have an out-of-range signal light. Last but not the least is the intercom monitors that transmits baby’s sounds as well as allow users to communicate with others in the house by the push of a button. If the baby is crying and you can’t come immediately, you can calm your baby with your voice by using the walkie-talkie feature.

Although baby monitors gives you the freedom to be away from the nursery, it is important to remember that they do not replace your presence. Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before using. Do not place baby monitors in direct sunlight or other heat sources and place it strategically so that you can “see” your baby and the monitor will not be disturb by other children.
